History of the slum
The slum became famous around 1980, when people living in the area became frustrated about the lack of development in the area. They settled their town, and launched the Orangi Pilot Project. The project includes several plans for the rehabilitation of the slum and for the construction of infrastructures (housing, education, credit for companies, rural development, etc). The local community of the slum financed, designed and build by hand their own sewerage system.
Living without proper sanitation, residents of the slums decided
to give up waiting for the government to install the sewers and
decided to build them by hand themselves.

A look at the lives of the residents
There are a lot of houses in the slum that are made of bricks. It is very common to find up to 18 people or even more living in the same house at once.
There are also roads to get on, but they are quite unknown by the habitants of the near slums.
Geography of the slum
The slum stretches out of the Khasba Hills and Paposh Nagar from the northern parts of Karachi.
The Khasba Hills form some kind of frontier between Orangi town and North Nazimabad Town.
To connect Orangi Town and North Nazimabad Town, roads were built through Khasba Hills.
